Friends of Avian Haven Web Links! |
Who We Are:
Avian Haven is a network of individuals and groups who are dedicated to working together to unite parrots who need homes with caring responsible people who are looking for them.
We work locally in the Arizona area as well as the Southwestern USA.
We have links to other trusted individuals and rescue/adoption groups that we can refer to people. Please check our Links page.
How Does Avian Haven Work?
Avian Haven works more like a "matchmaking"
service rather than a formal rescue organization. We maintain a list of parrots
needing homes as well as people who may be looking for a certain kind of bird.
This information may or may not be published on the Website. For the latest
listings, you may contact
parrotmom@mac.com.
Avian Haven will facilitate the matching of parrots and people. We are not
really set up to take birds in (but will in cases of urgency) so we try to keep
the birds in their homes until we can arrange a match. We will put the
prospective home in touch with the people who have the bird at the moment when
we feel there is a match between them. Any medical issues will be worked out
between the two parties, such as quarantine and other medical and behavioral
issues.
Avian Haven members may make home visits to assist in the placement of the
birds. We are also available for consultations if people are considering keeping
the bird but just have not made up their minds. We have a strong base of avian
knowledge to utilize with our members.
Is There an Adoption Fee?
If there are no vet fees/visits involved with
the match, there is a basic $50 facilitation fee to be paid to Avian Haven. If
there have been gas expenses incurred in getting this parrot to Avian Haven,
either a flat gas fee or a mileage fee will apply.
If there are fees involved from a visit to
a qualified Avian vet, the facilitation fee will be the cost of that vet bill
plus the $50. We will also accept any donations that are given to us to help
maintain our work.
Educational Classes Offered
Avian Haven also teaches two educational
classes. One is a basic parrot information class and the other one is a
curriculum geared for the needs and issues of the re-homed bird. These classes
are available either on an individual basis or in a group setting depending on
how many people wish to take the class. For fees, please use the contact
information.
Community Involvement
Avian Haven is currently working with ABC
(Arizona Bird Club) located in Tucson on a new program called ACED which stands
for Avian Companions for the Elderly and Disabled. We work together to bring
parrots to the people who can benefit from the joy that having a parrot in their
lives brings. We strive to place the smaller birds in homes and then work with
ACED volunteers to visit these matches. ACED will help with grooming as well as
support for these people with their newfound avian companions. If you know of
someone who would either enjoy having a bird or would like to help ACED, please
call 520 808 6202.
Avian Haven is also looking to work with several youth organizations in the area
to help promote avian enthusiasts. We believe that our young people are the
future of aviculture. We wish to nurture those young people who are interested.
If you know of any organization/s that would like to have us come and do a
presentation, please contact us. If you know of any young people who are
interested in "birds" please contact us. Several of our members got hooked on
hook bills when they were "little."
As always, there seems to be a need for re-homing for all animals we call our
pets. We here at Avian Haven hope to educate and facilitate the re-homing of
parrots without all the red tape required of other organizations. We are one of
the businesses who would one day like to be put out of business!!
Newsletter/online information
Avian Haven will publish a newsletter every two
months. In honor of a very special friend who gave us the name for it right
before she died, we are calling it "The Real Poop." If you would like to
receive one, please contact us. It will also be available in an email format if
you would like to receive it that way. This will feature the stories of the
birds that have found new homes, educational tips, Nutrition ideas and other
avian oriented information. We encourage people to participate and submit
articles for this publication. If you would like to be on our list that lets you
know what birds are available at the time, please email us and in the subject
line please put "Information List"
Thank you for taking the time to read about Avian Haven. We hope that your life
with your current or future avian companion will always be a pleasure.
Remembering that living with a parrot is like having a toddler in your life
forever will hopefully get you through the challenging times. If we can be of
service in any way, please do not hesitate to contact us.
